The ateliers are built on an open desolate plain in the far north of Scotland. An ecological building constructed using timber and straw bales from the neighbouring farm. Straw bales have a high insulation, both thermal and acoustic an advantage for studios shared by a sculptor and painter.

The straw is plastered with madder pink lime, giving an organic feel, which ties in with the rural setting and the pinkish granite of the local stone. The form of the building is simple and modern, with large double glazed timber sliding doors, which open onto the exquisite views beyond. The intention was to create a light uplifting space in its natural setting, which functions psychologically and pragmatically well for both artists.
