Set at the edge of a valley dominated by Aloes, the building takes the form of leaves lying on the site. These ‘leaves’ form a private court yard and a closed and ‘thorny’ front against the neighbouring properties. The cut side forms a glazed front towards north and the view. There the public spaces of the house face the sun, while private and intimate spaces reach deep into the site.

The brief presents two challenges:

▪ displaying brick products manufactured by the owner – special brick patterns and bonds reflect the theme of the building and the playful use of this common material

▪ taking 'green' in residential upmarket buildings to a new standard – the building will feature double glazing, the use of solar and wind energy for electricity as well as water and space heating and a water treatment plant.
